How to Engage and Market on Reddit
In order to defend the communities they’ve formed, Redditors are extremely protective of one another, and they despise anyone or any brand that tries to take advantage of the community. In the wrong hands, marketers approach Reddit as if it were Craigslist, with little regard for the audience’s values and objectives.
Walking into a Magic: the Gathering tournament at your local comic book store and raving about how amazing your T-shirts are would be like this in the real world. If you want to be successful on Reddit, you need to understand the reasons why people form communities there. Whether it’s for hobbies, social issues, or just plain pleasure, you need to respect that.
If you plan to market on Reddit, you should adopt the following best practices:
1.Engage with others in a genuine way by posting original stuff. Repurposing your everyday Facebook post and dumping it into a subreddit will not lead to Reddit marketing success. However, you may open up a whole new pool of potential customers for your company if you can establish yourself as an useful contributor to the community.
2.Be a member first. Few people believe a brand-new user account with no posts save for the ones made to sell products or services. Participate in the community and learn the ins and outs of how things function before you start marketing.
How to Create a Successful Reddit Presence for Your Brand
1.Build Your Feed
Go digging for all of the subreddits that might be relevant to your brand. As a starting point, I recommend using the home page as it is. Then to identify smaller, more specialist groups, look at the recommended communities inside a subreddit sidebar and run a Google search for “Reddit + [industry keywords]” (swapping in the topics or keywords that matter to you) (swapping in the topics or keywords that matter to you).
2.Get to know your target communities
Check in on Reddit daily and peruse your feed and view discussions. Start upvoting and adding comments where you may contribute. Get a sense of what kinds of content your target communities find interesting and the general average time when popular posts are submitted.
3.Share original content
Create a piece of content especially for your target Reddit audience (the next section outlines what types of content are popular on Reddit), but don’t be upset if it doesn’t garner a lot of attention. Just like every Facebook post doesn’t go viral, not every Reddit submission will become a mega-hit. If you get a few good comments and a few upvotes, that’s a start.
